How to Tell a Story

Essay Comparison

People typically have certain writing styles. For Twain, his settings of his essays are a reminder of an old western town with a saloon, a barbershop, the local paper, and a sheriff's office if the town is lucky. What could spur this type of writing, perhaps the time period in which Twain grew up or the city or county like “Calaveras” in which he lived and wrote in. Twain’s style is very westernesk and is evident in his writings. Another pattern of Twain’s is how he ends his essays. For example, in “About Barbers,” Twain elaborates how the barber by who he was served by died two hours after tending to him, creates a scenario of chaos that is the most important area of the essay, for one it is the conclusion of the essay, but more prominently it typically is the area of the story with the most importance. We know that most of Twain’s writings are set in small town cities of nameless counties. Also Twain lived after the Civil War, a time of chaos and disarray. This recurring theme is evident in some of his other writings. The diction used in his literary pieces contain fragmented shortened vocabulary like “git” instead of “get” and “shiverin’ en shakin.” The improper use of words in this way is basically to change the tone of the story for a desired “Western or southern effect. Twain was a very gifted writer, ranging from satirical mockeries to persuasive stories, he harnessed the power of the English language to embrace, manipulate, please or inspire the reader to a level complexity not many can reach.
